Here are some almost forgotten combinations in the history of Jazz
a. Jay and Kai (trombones)
b. Billy Eckstein and Sarah Vaughn with the Georgie Auld Band.
c. Jackie and Roy
They all did some great stuff together and made each other sound exquisite.
It is ironic that we find ourselves nine years into the 21st century and there are two irresistable forces going in totally different directions at the same time.
The business of Jazz in the US sadly is on the downward trend and has been so for several years. This includes venues, recording, club dates, and availability of friendly venues.
At the same time, the educational aspect of the art form is thriving. Universities and colleges are offering a myriad of fine programs.
Consequently, when fine well-educated students graduate they have no well-defined cultural area to nurture their talents and mature. The only "urban" venues available are either stadiums, amphlitheatres , or open fields where festivals can be held.
These two forces are not destined, at the moment to meet somewhere unless there is a cultural and business reawakening.
It heightens my passion to at least continue on with the mission at The Jazz Corner which is to preserve the art form and continue to present opportunity for performance in an intimate environment.
Feel free to comment on this and thanks for keeping America's art form alive.
